Word of Life
Now have I come to the calming hour,
Sleep is not here nor the restlessness
Of mind and vital vying for the power
To dominate the body consciousness.
There is a partial peace, a quiet turn
To higher thought and deeper reverie
Assessing that of which we still must learn
And having learned must then learn to be.
Some say this yoga is the easiest,
A simple offering is all we need,
But ploughing of the ground is the real test
And the careful nurturing of spirit-seed.
This is not the process of a single day
But a slow revealing through the years
Of all we are within and what we may
By Grace become transcending mortal spheres,
The petty small concerns of life's affairs
Or the fierce frontal assaults of chance and fate,
The need to grow beyond our human cares
Breaking the bounds of our circumscribed estate.
The night is long and day is slow to come.
If we can open to the inner sun,
Know earth our sacred charge, the spirit's home,
In all galactic space the chosen one.
And now regenerative sleep returns,
The body rests, the mind is stilled of thought
As soul comes forth and the fire brightly burns
At the place wherein the Word of Life is caught.
